Description
OLAS Guardian Man Overboard Alarm & Cut Off Switch

The OLAS Guardian is a wireless engine kill switch that acts within two seconds of a person falling overboard. It has the dual function of also acting as an instant, Man Overboard Alarm system. The Guardian simply connects with up to 15 wearable OLAS transmitters (wrist Tags or OLAS Float On Light), creating a virtual kill cord, and can cover a vessel up to 50ft. OLAS Guardian means power boat and RIB drivers are assured that their boat will stop in an instant, and / or an alarm will occur should the skipper or crew get separated from the boat, reducing the chances of a serious accident from a loose, unmanned, uncontrolled powerboat and ensuring a swift recovery can be actioned. They are free to move around their boat without constantly having to remember to attach, detach and re-attach a physical wired kill cord.

The Guardian connects to a vessels 12/24V power supply and existing kill switch using the supplied connectors making it quick and easy to install with immediate usability. A 21mm hole is required near to the existing kill switch for the 20mm stainless steel, LED control switch to be installed. The Guardian can be used in-place of or alongside an existing kill cord switch and will operate if the physical kill cord has not been attached to the driver. On most engines a simple parallel connection to the existing kill switch will enable full wireless cut-off capability. The Guardian is easily operated via the OLAS App, free to download from the App Store for iOS and the Google Play Store for Android. The OLAS App is a powerful tool for controlling the Guardians functions and for aiding in fast rescue.

In your opinion, what is the minimum in MOB Recovery Systems we should carry? We have a 3.5m RIB and spend our time in coastal waters on the South Coast. Ceri D
The essentials are a kill cord system, VHF Radio, lifejackets for all onboard, a throw light or lifejacket lights, a search light and I would also recommend a PLB. My reasoning is outlined below. You should always have a kill cord system in use when the engine is running, this ensures the vessel will stop if all onboard are thrown from the boat. Our OLAS Guardian acts as a wireless kill cord system allowing greater freedom of movement around the vessel and eliminates the possibility of the driver removing the physical kill cord and forgetting to put it back on. OLAS also benefits from the mobile app which records the GPS location of the MOB, when it occurs, which can be useful if you must make the MOB Mayday call. Lifejackets should always be worn by all onboard as this the best MOB recovery system, ensuring the MOB remains above water. When it comes to recovery systems it is strongly recommended that all onboard carry a light to aid in visual identification should they go overboard, for this we recommend the Exposure Float On, which floats and has a water activated strobe built in. It is compact enough to be attached to a lifejacket or kept in a pocket. Your vessel should also carry a portable search light onboard to aid in spotting an MOB in the water, as you should always be prepared to head into dusk / night. For this we recommend the Exposure MOB Carbon, a floating search light. PLB’s are also a great addition as an extra bit of safety if self-recovery of the MOB is not possible. 16th Dec 2020
