Boat Shore Power Cables, Sockets & Connectors

Connecting to shore power lets you draw mains electricity from the marina supply instead of running down your batteries. This is especially useful for topping up charge overnight, running the heating, or keeping the fridge cold while you're away from the boat.

Getting the right combination of marine power cable, plug and inlet is what makes the connection safe, watertight and hassle-free.

Cable, Plug, Inlet or Socket — What Do You Actually Need?

If you're not sure which part you're missing, here's how the four pieces fit together:

  • Shore power inlet: the fixed fitting on your boat (hull or cockpit), wired into the onboard electrics. This is what the cable connects to at the boat end.
  • Shore power socket/connector: this is on the end of the cable that will connect to your shore power inlet.
  • Shore power plug: the fitting on one end of your cable that plugs into the marina's socket.
  • Shore power cable / cordset: the complete marine-rated lead that runs from the marina bollard to your boat. They are fitted with a plug at one end and a connector at the other.

Many boats use 16A fittings in the Marinco style. You can find a range of Marinco compatible plugs and sockets, inlets and boat shore power cables here.

Choosing Between 16A and 32A

Smaller boats and weekend cruisers are typically fitted with 16A systems, which handle lighting, a fridge and battery charging comfortably. Larger boats running air conditioning, multiple chargers or bigger inverters often need 32A. Check the rating on your existing inlet before ordering a replacement cable or plug — mixing amperages needs an adaptor.

Marine Grade Matters

A domestic extension lead isn't rated for being in the marine environment and able to cope with saltwater exposure. Using one dockside is a genuine safety risk. Marine shore power fittings use locking, watertight connectors. They're designed to handle rain, spray and the flexing of a boat on its mooring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is shore power on a boat?

Shore power is a mains electricity connection supplied by a marina or harbour. It allows your boat to receive 230V AC power while alongside, so you can operate onboard appliances without relying solely on your onboard batteries.

What is the difference between a shore power cable, plug and inlet?

A shore power cable connects your boat to the marina power pedestal. The plug and connector are fitted to the cable itself, while the shore power inlet is permanently installed on the boat and provides the connection point for the cable.

Can I replace just the plug or connector?

Yes. If your shore power cable is still in good condition but the plug or connector has become damaged, you can often replace just that component. It's important to select a compatible fitting with the correct current rating for your existing cable and shore power system.
