Personal Locator Beacons - PLBs
What is a PLB?
A PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) is a compact, personal safety device. They are used to alert search and rescue services when you’re in an emergency situation. When activated, it transmits a distress signal via satellite networks that help search and rescue teams locate you.
How Does a PLB Work?
Once manually activated, a PLB sends a coded emergency message to the Cospas-Sarsat satellite system. This then passes your registered details to the nearest rescue coordination centre.
Most models now also include built-in GPS for highly accurate positioning. They transmit a primary signal 406MHz and may transmit a secondary signal on 121.5 MHz. These help to pinpoint your location to rescuers.
They may also transmit AIS, VHF DSC or other frequencies, depending on the model.*
These devices work independently of mobile networks. This makes them ideal for areas with no signal—whether at sea or inland.
Who Should Carry a PLB?
PLBs are ideal for anyone who ventures beyond the safety of mobile coverage, including:
- Kayakers, paddleboarders and small craft users
- Solo skippers or offshore racers
- Coastal walkers and adventure hikers
- Divers, climbers and wild campers
Unlike an EPIRB, a PLB is registered to you as an individual, not a boat. This makes them a versatile personal safety solution, usable on land or sea.
