Marine AIS - Automatic Identification System
Automatic Identification Systems more commonly referred to as AIS is an automated tracking system for marine vessels. Marine AIS units can act as an aid to navigation, or, be an aid to safety and man overboard rescue with AIS MOB beacons.
AIS data consists of information about the ship, as well as their navigation status. This data can be overlaid on most chart plotters when connected to a suitable AIS unit.
Most commercial ships, passenger ships and fishing vessels are mandated to carry AIS transponders. Each year more sail and power leisure craft are also fitting AIS equipment. If you have AIS enabled on board you can be aware of more vessels around you, as well as make them aware of you.
