Sailing gloves might not seem like an important piece of kit, but they shouldn't be overlooked as they can make or break a day out on the water.
Why are sailing gloves important? First and foremost, they're there to protect your hands from rope handling and rope burns. Whether you're cruising, yacht racing or a dinghy sailor, when on board you're handling rope a lot and using your hands for many tasks on board. Gloves are also there though, to offer protection from the sun and can add some warmth and comfort against foul weather conditions.
Which sailing gloves do I need? The gloves that a person might need is determined by the activity they are doing or the season and conditions they find themselves sailing in most often. The gloves you wear for summer sailing might not offer the added warmth that you want for cold weather winter sailing, likewise if you're driving a rib, wind chill is more of a factor and you can sacrifice some dexterity for warmth with heavier weight gloves.
First and foremost when it comes to gloves, you're looking for a comfortable fit - be it long fingered or short fingered gloves. A good level of grip and a consideration to how durable they'll be for the level of activity or sailing you do.
