OLAS MOB Alert Wrist tag

The OLAS tag is a compact, ‘Smart’, man overboard system. It can be easily attached to adults, children, pets and objects such as overboard floatation devices. The tags connect to the OLAS application on a mobile device. Within 8 seconds of the man overboard incident occurring, the OLAS mobile application technology detects a break in its ‘virtual tether’ to the tag. The mobile phone(s) then sound a loud alarm, alerting crew to the fact someone is overboard. OLAS then aids the crew with the MOB recovery, clearly directing them to the GPS location where the MOB occurred with clear visual signals and bearing data. OLAS stores all location data and time of incident required by the rescue services.

Now available as a fully integrable option into the ErgoFit+ lifejacket (550389) – taking man overboard technology to the next level

Faulty Goods

If you receive your goods and believe them to be faulty, please contact us straight away with a brief description of the problem. If we require you to return the product for a replacement, we will send you a pre-paid Royal Mail label for delivery back to us. Unfortuantely we cannot send the courier back to collect the items.

Returning goods to Force 4 is easy!

  1. Please contact us by ringing 0345 1300 710 or email on [email protected] This way we'll be able to determine whether you would like to return the product for a refund or whether you'd like to exchange the product. We are unable to process the return of faulty goods that we're not expecting.
  2. We'll then give you a returns number. This returns number will need to be clearly marked on the outside of your parcel so it can be identified on arrival. Please note, failure to mark a returns reference number on the outside of your parcel may result in a delay in processing your return.
  3. Don't forget your proof of postage, just in case!
  4. Once we receive the item we'll be able to proceed with a refund or an exchange.

*this excludes faulty goods with manufacturers defects. If goods are found to be faulty during use, after the returns period, please just give us a ring on 0345 1300 710 and we'll be happy to help.

Questions & Answers
Questions & Answers
My husband often takes his boat out alone. Would the phone with the app need to be within a certain range of the device to be alerted? Janet Owers

This product is designed to allow somebody who is on the vessel, for example sleeping down below, to be alerted to the fact that somebody has fallen overboard. It is not designed to work in your situation unfortunately, where you are not located on the vessel. It may be worth looking at a personal EPIRB, that your husband could activate should he fall in to the water. This would alert the coastguard, and the built in GPS would provide a position to them as well. I would recommend something like the Ocean Signal PLB1 or the ACR ResQLink+.

Can the tag be switched on and off; does it only switch itself on when in the water? Peter Murray-Robertson

The tag needs to be switched on before it will operate.

This is easily done by depressing the button on the face for 2 seconds.

If left on, it will last in standby mode for up to 5 months.

If not being used, it can be turned off by pressing and holding the same button.

It does not turn on or off automatically.

There is a video explaining the operation on our web page, and lots more information on the Exposure OLAS YouTube channel

Do the OLAS tags sometimes give false signals? I thought it had happened a couple of times, but it seems to come right. Does it mean it’s faulty? Also what is the best way to test it? Graham E GrahamE
A false alarm can occur if the tag goes out of range for longer than 6 seconds. As soon as the tag comes back into range the alarm is automatically cancelled, this is why you would see it coming right. We recommend placing you mobile phone in the central location on the boat and then walking slowly around the vessel with your tag, carrying out the general operations you would do whilst at sea. Listen out for the alarm. If you hear an alarm trace your steps back and note where your tag reconnects. If you get a false alarm at this point each time then you can try mobile in the mobile device to a more central location which is closer to this 'black' spot. An alternative is to use the OLAS Core system which has a greater area of coverage, upto a 50ft vessel. The OLAS mobile app alone is generally only recommended for vessels up to 30ft. We also advise that all other bluetooth devices should be disconnected from the mobile device that is running the OLAS app as this can also cause false alerts. 17th December 2020
We are looking to boost our safety equipment a bit. We all have PLBs at the moment. Could you explain the advantages of your tag system over PLBs. FrankieB
The OLAS system is not a replacement for PLBs but it offers a much greater chance of self rescue compared to PLBs. In colder UK waters speed of rescue, and therefore often self rescue is of the utmost importance. PLBs can take upto 30 minutes for the distress signal to reach the coast guard, after which the rescue need to be intaitated. The advantage of OLAS is it alerts all aboard instantly, whilst simultaneously storing the GPS location. The OLAS app then helps guide the remaining crew back to the point of loss where, if visual contact of the MOB has been lost, the search can commence. If you enter your vessels information, (vessel name MMSI, Call Sign) into the OLAS app before setting sail it automatically inputs this information and GPS info into a MOB Mayday script which can be relayed to the coast guard if required. 17th December 2020
