When should I replace my boat's anodes?

Sacrificial anodes protect your underwater metalwork by corroding first. Check them regularly—replace when they're about half worn away (or sooner in harsh conditions). Some anode manufacturers add an indicator to their anodes; when this indicator is visible, it is time to change them.

Never let them disappear completely, or your props, shafts, and skin fittings could start pitting. We stock zinc and aluminium for saltwater use and magnesium options to suit freshwater.

How often should I apply antifouling paint?

Most boats benefit from a fresh coat once a year to stay ahead of barnacles, slime and weed. If your boat lives in the water year‑round, it’s worth keeping on top of it. Tired antifoul means more growth which means more drag, slower speeds and higher fuel use.

Which antifoul should I use?

That depends on how you use your boat. Most cruising yachts and motorboats (up to around 25 knots) choose self‑polishing antifoul. It slowly wears back through the season, stays effective and avoids heavy paint build‑up.

If you run a high‑speed boat, keep your boat on a mud berth, a hard antifoul is usually the better choice. It’s more durable, stands up to abrasion and can be polished smooth for extra performance — which is why many racing boats prefer it.

Can I use household cleaners and tools on my boat?

Household products are rarely designed for saltwater, UV exposure or marine surfaces. In fact, there is a chance that a household cleaner will damage seals or coatings that protect your boat. On top of that, they can often be much more harmful to marine environments as well.

Marine-specific cleaners, brushes and tools are formulated to be effective without damaging gelcoat, finishes or fittings, helping you clean and maintain your boat safely and efficiently.

What's the best way to clean and polish my boat's hull and topsides?

Start with a thorough wash using marine-safe soap and a soft brush to remove salt and dirt.

For oxidation or stains, use a dedicated cleaner/polish (like those with mild abrasives). This will help tackle those tough stains and leave your boat looking clean.

To finish, apply a quality marine wax or polymer sealant to bring gelcoat back to life, add UV protection and leave a good shine. Do this 1-2 times a year to keep gelcoat looking sharp and prevent chalking.
