Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) & Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs)
EPIRBS & PLBs are intended to indicate a distress situation where normal forms of communication are unavailable or do not work. They should be carried as a safeguard against any life threatening incidents that may occur anywhere in the world, on land, sea or in the air.
EPIRBs differ from PLBs in that they generally have both manual & automatic activation (PLBs are only manual), have much longer transmitting durations (often 48hours +), a flashing or strobe light and they float. They are also registered to an individual vessel whereas a PLB is registered to an individual.
Both EPIRBs & PLBs must be registered with your National EPIRB Authority. Each unit has a unique digital identity (a 15 digit number). This number is sent along with your 406MHz distress signal to the Search & Rescue Services to aid in the rescue process. The registration includes information about the vessel (in the case of EPIRBs) such as type, size, name etc along with personal details such as next of kin, medical information etc. Registration is free and, after the initial purchase of your EPIRB or PLB, there are no subscription fees or airtime charges.
Upon activation, EPIRBS & PLBs transmit a radio signal on the 406 MHz emergency frequency which is received by an orbiting COSPAS SARSAT satellite. The satellite then re-transmits the signal to the Rescue Centre in the country where you registered your Beacon who then calculate your whereabouts. The Rescue Centre will then determine what Search & Rescue facilities are closest to you, and contact them to arrange a rescue. In the case of EPIRBs & PLBs that have an integral GPS, the initial search area is reduced from a 28sq. mile area for non-GPS EPIRBs to an almost pinpointed position. This can save significant amounts of time in the search. In addition to the 406MHz signal, both EPIRBs & PLBs transmit a 121.5MHz homing signal. This secondary signal allows a search party in your vicinity to pick up the signal and immediately calculate which direction it is coming from.

Life rafts are strictly for emergencies on board your boat. A life raft will be packaged either in a cannister or a Valise. You should consider how many people you would have to be able to carry in a liferaft, our range goes from 4 man to 12 man, we can get larger ones on request. You should also consider what comes with your liferaft, whether it's safety packs or RORC packs. Liferafts need to be reguarly serviced for obvious reasons and we can supply this service , just ask in your nearest store.
