Binoculars - What do the numbers mean?
On all of our range of binoculars you will see two numbers in the title, usually something like 7 x 50. The first number represents the magnification power of the binocular. The second number is the diameter of the front lens, also known as the objective lens. The magnifiaction power is a guide of how much the closer things will appear when you view them, so in our example the image will be magnified seven times. The larger the magnification the more the image quality will reduce, this is usually manifested by the brightness of the image, this is compensated by increasing the size of the objective lens to keep the brightness and quality of the image high. The larger the diameter the more light they will take in.
