Choosing a life raft
Life rafts are strictly for emergencies on board your boat, they are designed to keep you and your crew alive if your boat has become uninhabitable (boat has sunk, caught fire or capsized et cetera). It will offer basic protection from your environment & is a larger brighter visual target for any rescuing parties.
It will be packaged either in a cannister or a Valise. A cannister packed raft will be stored on the deck of the boat by a cradle (hydrostatic releases ensure that if your boat sinks before you've got to the liferaft it will automatically release from the cradle and float to the surface). A valise packed raft will be stored below deck, when purchasing this type of raft you must consider your ability to access this quickly & easily in case of emergency (valise rafts are normally lighter and cheaper than a cannister equivalent).
You should also consider how many people you would have to be able to carry in an emergency, our range goes from 4 man to 12 man, however we can get larger ones on request.
It's often a good idea to consider features like an insulated floor, as if you did have to spend any amount of time in a raft, sitting on top of cold water would become very harsh. Make sure the raft will be easy to board in rough seas, boarding ladders and ramps are a good idea.
You should also consider what comes with your survival raft, whether it's safety packs or RORC packs. Safety boats need to be reguarly serviced for obvious reasons and we can supply this service, just ask in your nearest store for details or call our mail order team.
